Next Winteringham new clubhouse sub committee meeting.
It’s 11.00am Sunday June 7th. (TB: all members welcome?? – check with Helen or Roger).
cheers
Helen.
is what Spider T looked like when Mal Nicholson first found her and the attached articles show her present state. (follow the link and ‘turn’ to pp. 8-9). Mal says he reckons he has “put 22,000 man hours in to restoration and don’t ask about cost.” Spider T is to pay a visit to Brough on 11th July 2009 and be open to members during the day to have a look around. To mark the occasion Mal is bringing some musicians with squeeze boxes etc to play folk music and sea shanties on the balcony of the club for the evening.
Also I have asked Tony Bullimore, (or here), if he will come back with his wife and do another after dinner talk to raise funds for RNLI and he has confirmed. Also asked Coxswain of Humber lifeboat who also accepted (his personal website here). Date to be confirmed around February 2010. Last time he came it was our last gents’ dinner held in the new catering area of the club and some of our ladies were not pleased they could not attend. This time it’s for the ladies.
Hope you can use this OK.

PRE-SEASON 2009 NEWSLETTER FROM YOUR SAILING SECRETARY
March 2009
Ahoy fellow sailors. It’s that joyful time of the year again with the start of the new sailing season only a few weeks away. I hope you are all working hard to get your boats ready for her launch day. Philomena and I have been busy getting Viento Del Sur (the old woody) ready for her launch on the 1st march.
We are both looking forward to sailing on the river again in the White sail series which was well supported last year and got off to a good start with North Bank boats setting off on Friday afternoons/evenings across the river to meet up with the South Bank boats at the Winteringham start line to start the race, sail around a course, finish, and then set off back to Brough in time to get back on their berths.
It all worked well but start times needed to be flexible. The racing was close throughout the series from 4 boats that competed regularly. The most important thing to have been achieved with this series is for the first time (I think) south bank boats have been able to enter and finish a club race and then return to their berths. The Friday afternoon/evening spring tides are good for us again this season so we should get the series off to a good start over the Easter weekend (10,11,12 April) with the Easter White Sail at Brough. I hope you can join in.
The sailing and social program for 2009 has all the HYC regular events from March through to December, so if you’re interested in cruising, racing or just going for a sail over the tide, there is a club event you can take part in. Which reminds me, there is a new club event in the program this year for the Brough skippers called The Brough Round The Island Rally. This is not a race, but more like a time trial, the only rules being you take your start time when you pass through the “Gate” sail to and around Broomfleet island (clockwise or anti clockwise it’s up to you) and take your finish time when you get back to the “Gate”. There are 3 Rallies this season with a handsome trophy for the winner. Trevor and I, are both hopeful that the Brough skippers will make this event their own as the south bank skippers have with the Winteringham rallies and go out on the river and give it their support. This event is open to flying fifteens, squibs and cruisers.
For the offshore racing skippers there are 4 events to look forward to starting with the HYC Canada Wreck Race (Sun.10thMay) starting at Brough Hull Marina 08:00. Last year’s Canada wreck race is one of my all time great races as it was the first time round the buoy and on to finish the race 3rd. (out of three) as skipper on Menace with only one crew - thanks Jake!
If you fancy racing to Holland, the HA HU HA race is heading back to Harlingen which starts at Hull Marina Tuesday 23rd June in company with the Harlingen Water Sports Club race fleet. I have done this race twice in Sebowisha. It’s a great race and the ‘cloggies’ really look after you even if you win their race (don’t they Mark. DP)
The HYC Inner Dowsing race is on the weekend Sat.11th Sun 12th July starting at Brough 10:00. The 2007 race was abandoned due to thick fog. We were at 4A when I retired, with chart and compass in hand I navigated to Haile Sand Fort. Even though we could not see it, we anchored where I thought it was. When the fog lifted there was the fort 100mts to port as was the rest of the fleet.
The HYC East Coast Challenge starting at Brough 08:00 Friday 21st August. This event coincides with the RYYC regatta. We race to Bridlington Friday; race in the RYYC guy shackles pursuit race Saturday afternoon; on the Sunday we race back to the Humber. It is a tough event and was introduced at the Captain’s request in 2007 to help re-establish the HYC’s long association with the RYYC. The crews who entered last year had 3 days of great racing and socializing but lost the next 2 days sleeping. All of these events are open to any cruising skippers who would like to “cruise in company” with the race fleets and meet up for a meal and drinks later.
The IRC/PY HAC series kicks off with the HAC Regatta at Hull Marina over the early May bank holiday. This event from its introduction in 2007 has been hosted and sponsored by Hull Marina who offer competitors 3 nights visitor mooring for the price of 2. They also donated several of the great prizes up for grabs (such as 3 night’s free visitor mooring, 1hour lift and hold etc.) This event is also sponsored by Kildale Marine who also donate several of the prizes.
Since 2007/08 the HAC series was made up of 4 regattas’ (HAC, HYC, HCA, GCYC) 10 races, using your best 6 results to count for the trophy. The 2009 series has slightly changed and is now 8 races, 5 to count towards the trophies, (HYC 3 races, HCA 2 races, GCYC 3 races). Also included is a team event for both classes which is a race from Grimsby to the Canada Wreck buoy and finishing at Grimsby, which will take place on the 12th July 2009. In 2006/2007 several major changes were introduced to improve the HAC series. Nine people from 4 clubs have worked very hard and gave up lots of their time to implement these changes to make HAC better for all of us who race yachts on the Humber. After 2 seasons I’m very pleased with the outcome.
Here are a few HAC facts:
- 2007 HYC yacht Menace won the HAC PY series trophy.
- 2008 HYC yacht Whangdoodle won the HAC PY series trophy.
- HYC yacht RSJ won the HAC IRC series trophy.
- 2008 11 HYC yachts regularly or occasionally competed in the HAC IRC/PY series
- Over 40 HYC members competed as skipper/crew in the HAC IRC/PY series with several people as their guests or first time crew, some who enjoyed the experience so much have joined the HYC to continue to sail and to learn more about sailing.
- 2007/2008 the HYC Captain competed in all HAC events and attended all social functions giving them all the thumbs up.
- 2007/2008 the HAC IRC/PY series was the most supported, the most competitive and the best club racing on the Humber which has resulted in 4 great regatta’s per year for 2 years running, as you can see so much has been done in such a short time, I hope the 2009 season will be as good for all concerned.
The Squib fleet under the captaincy of Bob Smales looks set to have a great 2009 season with the fleet increased to 10 squibs (that will make an impressive site on the HYC start line). We should see some exciting and competitive racing on the upper Humber from them, as they have three series trophies to compete for. To complement this, Bob has included in his program, Squib Open Invitation events for skippers/crews from RYYC, Welton Sailing Club, and North Lincs Sailing Club, to sail squibs on the Humber. Always a good social event at the club, so why not join us. I’m sure Bob and the Squib sailors will also be visiting their guests at their respective clubs throughout the season. Thanks Bob, you’re doing a great job promoting the HYC, the Squibs and the sport of sailing.
As the squib fleet increases in numbers unfortunately the Flying Fifteen fleet has lost some of its regular competitors this season, but we still have enough Flying Fifteens in the fleet to keep the class racing at the HYC. Hopefully we can increase the numbers from our new ‘Younger’ members who have shown an interest in this class and sailed as crew last season. The club’s Flying Fifteen ‘Fugitive’ could be rigged and launched for their use, if they would like to compete in the Flying Fifteens series this season.
Usually by the end of January I have formed my Sailing Committee which historically is made up of the fleet captains, from each class. To date I have no volunteers for the IRC, or the PY classes, so if you’re into yacht racing in IRC or PY, or are thinking of racing in these classes this season, and would like to be part of the 2009 sailing committee please contact me on 07885 460419 asap for more information.
In 2008 the racing committee voted in favour of scrapping the racing fees, (although there may be an entry fee for the HYC Regatta). So you can enter as many club events as you can cram into this season for free.
The racing season starts Friday 13th March 2009 (hope you’re not superstitious), with a white sail race on the afternoon tide. Also the IRC & PY early series starts Saturday 14th March 2009. Too early for some may be but not soon enough for others. I certainly can’t wait to get sailing, so I hope to see you out on the river soon. Have a great season at the club and of course HAPPY SAILING.
Keith Smith
HYC Hon Sailing Secretary
