Updated 20 November 2009.
The basic instructions for using the site are still to be found on this page below.
Internet and Browser tips – please read this first! (especially Internet Explorer users).
www.humberyawlclub.com or
humberyawl.wordpress.com ?
The first of these is the club’s official domain and some material is held on webspace under that domain. Most of what you see there, however, comes from the second ‘blog’ address. Most of what you see will be identical at either address. An advantage of using the second address is that ‘bookmarked’ pages (favourites) will be listed and linked correctly under appropriate titles whereas all bookmarks made for the first address will simply show ‘Humber Yawl Club’ and take you to the Home Page.
The basic instructions for using the site are still to be found on this page below, but I assume most will have got the hang of this by now. You can also try some fancier things which will notify you of any new posts or comments. Those of you who know about RSS or ‘Newsfeeds’ can skip this. For those who don’t, you can ‘subscribe’ to a ‘feed’ which will notify you of such changes. If you click on the ‘RSS’ Feed on ‘Posts’ or ‘Comments’ at the top right of any page (to the right of the Humber Yawl Club page title) you can subscribe to the notification feed for either (or both if you do one at a time). You can also subscribe to a feed on the comments on any individual post at the foot of the page for that post. (To get there, you have to click on the post title, Comments or No Comments). However, with the present level of activity, subscribing to comments is probably not very useful so I’d recommend simply subscribing to the posts feed.
To do that, it used to be the case that you needed to download and install an RSS feed reader (or ‘Newsfeed reader’). You can still do that if you wish (if you’ve nothing better to do?) BUT, most modern/recent web-browsers (IE7, Firefox 2/3/3.5, Safari) will handle it for you after a fashion. Usually this involves adding the link to the Bookmarks (Favourites) toolbar and you may have to look at this (click on the relevant link) from time to time, or you MAY receive active notification, as with a feed reader, when using the browser. Older browsers will only give you a page of code, so you would need to update your web browser.
Still borrowing from the ASA! – How to use this site:
This website is what is called a ‘blog’, short for web log. The home page consists quite simply of a series of posts or articles, listed latest first, (as at March 2009, now on the ‘News’ page) and indexed via the Topics box (above right). To see older entries on the ‘Home Page’ (News), scroll downwards.
You should navigate the site mainly by using the TABS at the top of every page and in most browsers, you can return to the top of any webpage and therefore the critical navigation Tabs here (top of the page) by hitting the ‘Home’ key or ‘Page Up’ key on your keyboard. (Laptops may vary).
The long column to the right here is for fine navigation only and becomes progressively less interesting as you go down. There is nonetheless a full page listing (sitemap – removed 1st July ‘09) and below that a long list of external links which might be of interest.
You may wish to adjust the site appearance by changing the text size in the View menu of your web-browser. You can also locate articles by when they were created, by clicking in the Archive box and selecting a year & month. Or you can Search the site for what you’re after. The calendar also links dates to posts on that day. The tabs at the top of the screen should be self-explanatory. To see all of the site, look at the Page list below right as not all the pages are tabbed at the top. Some pages may require a password. Sub-pages are linked to from the top pages. If you ‘get lost’, return to the Home Page/Tabs. The ‘Blogroll’ below right is a list of related sites which may be of interest. Categorised sub-sections follow the main blogroll. Recent comments lists the most recent readers’ comments. You can view or make comments by clicking on ‘Comments/No Comments’ or by typing in the ‘Leave a reply’ box on other pages. If you wish to make your own posts or pages, please email for an invitation. Pop-up previews show external links only. Most external links will open in a new window.
This page has the following sub pages.
Hi, How do I send pics to the gallery?
Tony
There are several ways:
1. You can upload pictures to an ANY? online picture service like Google’s or Flickr (you probably have to register first in most cases) and then provide a link to these in a comment or by sending it to Roger or me.
2. You can send the pictures (preferably by email) to me or Roger to upload.
(This is probably the best and only method we’ve used so far).
3. You can register as a user of WordPress/HYC and become a contributor to the site – (you need an email invitation from us to become a contributor; then you would need to be ‘upgraded’ to author/editor to be able to post your own pictures.)
See the Editors page for further details: http://humberyawl.wordpress.com/editors/
Method two will get them uploaded in a few days. You MAY be able to do it with method 1. now but I need to check and will get back to you. Method 3. might take some time. If you want to become a contributor/author/editor, please email me.

Test picture link here:

(IF the links here are removed, then you can only use method 1. if you send the link to me or Roger).
Trevor’s weekly ‘update’:
The comments abover explain how to get pictures on the site or linked to from the site – see Gallery for examples.
Use the search box (top right of each and every page) to find anything on the site – match must be exact so start with just one word – eg. Use ‘macarthur’ to find Ellen MacArthur – ‘ellen’ will also find every occurrence of EXCellenT!
Don’t forget Winteringham weekend 25th July.
